Post Graduate Lecture Series in Computer Science

The University of the Philippines System (UP - Baguio and UP - Diliman) and the De La Salle Philippines (DLSU – Manila and DLS - Canlubang)  in a cooperative venture with Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, ETH Zurich, Department of Computer Science under the auspices of the Third Philippine-Swiss Information Technology School are organizing a post–graduate short course as part of a lecture series in Computer Science on the topics:

* Data Structures,
* Probability and Optimization
* Machine Learning and Applications
* Information Search and Retrieval

The objective of the lecture series is to further the professional education of research students and instructors of Computer Science at Universities in the Philippines.

Topics: Machine Learning and Applications (introduction of the Bayes optimal classifier, linear classifiers and the perceptron, margin idea and support vector machines, idea of kernels, k-means,  clustering and the EM algorithm, clustering for relational data)

Topics:  Information Retrieval and Search (text processing, indexing, and compression, retrieval models (vector space and probabilistic), automatic text categorization, hyperlink and citation analysis, recommender systems and collaborative filtering, learning to rank from implicit user feedback, information extraction (optional))

Application Procedure

Slots are limited so preference will be given to those applicants who are involved or will be involved in either teaching Machine Learning or Information Retrieval or conducting research in these areas.

Interested applicants must submit their latest CV, which should include
  1. academic credentials –degree(s), school/university where the degree was obtained, date;
  2. teaching experience – courses taught, school/university where the courses were taught, and level of courses taught (undergraduate/ master's/ doctorate) ,
  3. research experience – positions held, research publications, undergraduate and graduate theses, and thesis supervision. Any pertinent special skills and other relevant professional qualifications must also be included.
Submit a letter of intent to participate by sending an e-mail with an attached CV to
chuacl@dlsu. edu.ph on or before November 22, 2007 and ask your Chair or Dean to separately e-mail a letter of endorsement.

To qualify as participants, applicants must get the endorsement of their Chair or Dean.

Registration Fee:  A registration fee of Php 2,500 to cover food and materials for the
lectures and hands-on sessions will be charged.  Pay to De La Salle University – Manila if you will pay in cheque.
